In 2020 MANIPIULATE’s format changed as we moved to new venues in Edinburgh. During a very busy nine days residency at Summerhall, we presented productions by Slovenian company Lutkovno Geldališče Ljubljana (Open the Owl), French Collectif AÏE AÏE AÏE (Ma Biche et Mon Lapin & Ersatz) and English company Improbable Dolls (Mina), as well as Scottish-based artists and companies Katie Armstrong (Sketches), Melanie Jordan (A Brief History of the Fragile Male Ego) and Zinnia Oberski (Dreams of the Small Gods). We also welcomed the return of leading Scottish company Oceanallover and its new production Transfigured. In addition, we presented an impressively diverse range of smaller completed pieces and works in progress created and presented by 29 Scottish-based artists and companies, in our main programme, Rising Voices, Snapshots: [email protected] and [email protected] series. At the Festival Theatre Studio, we programmed the Russian company Samoloet (After Chekov), as well as enjoyed the return of festival favourites Paper Doll Militia and the company’s new production, A Wire Apart. Highlights of our animated films programme included a retrospective of the work of leading English animator Emma Calder, as well as a brilliantly eclectic and virtuosic programme of shorts screened recently at the Festival Stop Motion Montréal, the world’s first festival devoted exclusively to stop frame animation.
